Unless you are sure that the system that the Maxtor hard drive is being installed in uses Cables Select, do not set up the drive with this feature enabled. Maxtor hard drives support Cable Select - which allows the system to identify Devuce 0 and Device 1 drives on the interface cable. If your system manufacturer for specific procedures for installing hard drives. On Maxtor CrystalMax hard drives, the Cable Select is enabled by installing a jumper on J48. When J48 is installed, remove the jumper from J50. System Hangs During Boot ------------------------ If the system hangs after installing the Maxtor hard drive, either before or after setting the system BIOS, the system may have a BIOS with a cylinder limitation. This may occur for hard drives with capacities larger than 2.1GB. If this happens, do the following: 1. Turn the system OFF. 2. Install the cylinder reduction jumper (J42) on the drive using the spare jumper across pins J48 and J48; or, if the drive is installed as a Slave, store the spare jumper across J42 and J44. 3. If the BIOS was set to AUTO DETECT, boot the system with the MAX BLAST installation software diskette to complete the hard drive installation. If other BIOS setting were used, access the BIOS SETUP program and set the BIOS parameters to a User Definable Type with 4,092 cylinders, 16 heads and 63 sectors per track for the Maxtor hard drive. Then boot the system with the MAXBLAST installation software diskette to complete the hard drive installation. NOTE When jumper J42 is installed, the Maxtor hard drive must be prepared using the MAXBLAST installation software. Special NOTE for Windows NT 4.0 Users ------------------------------------- If the cylinder reduction jumper is installed, WIN NT 4.0 WILL NOT work with MAXBLAST Installation Software (ver. 9.00M or newer) and the drive capacity will be limited to 2.1GB. If the cylinder reduction jumper is not installed, WIN NT 4.0 WILL work with MAXBLAST. ********************************************************************** I N S T A L L ********************************************************************** MAXTOR 83500A/83062A/82625A/82187A/81750A/81312A/80875A CRYSTAL MAX Notes On Installation ===================== Installation direction ---------------------- horizontally vertically +-----------------+ +--+ +--+ | | | +-----+ +-----+ | | | | | | | | | +-+-----------------+-+ | | | | | | +---------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +---------------------+ | +-----+ +-----+ | +-+-----------------+-+ +--+ +--+ | | | | +-----------------+ The drive will operate in all axis (6 directions). Important: Pre-installation Notes --------------------------------- Thank you for choosing a precision Maxtor hard drive. Please read these instructions before installing the drive. If you do not understand the installation steps, have a qualified computer technician do the installation. Pre-formatted Drive with Pre-loaded Software -------------------------------------------- This Maxtor hard drive has been low-level formatted at the factory. DO NOT use a low-level formatting program on this drive. Your Maxtor hard drive contains either a factory-configured partition with a directory titled "MAX" or a floppy diskette labeled MaxBlast. Both versions contain installation software and a Readme file containing installation tips and answers to frequently asked questions. To download the installation software from the drive, use a blank diskette 1.2 MB. System BIOS Notice ------------------ Certain system BIOS's do not support hard drives with more than 4095 cylinders (2.048 gigabytes). To get the full capacity of your Maxtor drive, you will need to follow the suggested installation instructions. Hard Drive Handling Precautions ------------------------------- Please take a moment to observe the following handling cautions: During handling, NEVER drop, jar, or bump a drive. Handle the drive by its sides and avoid touching the printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). - Hard drives are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Use proper ESD practices by grounding yourself and the computer system the hard drive will be installed in. - Allow the hard drive to reach room temperature BEFORE installing it in your computer system. - NEVER switch DC power onto the drive by plugging an electrically live DC source cable into the drive's connector. NEVER connect a live bus connector to the hard drive's IDE interface connector. Hard Drive Installation ----------------------- Maxtor recommends that all data on existing hard drives be properly backed-up prior to installing your new Maxtor hard drive. - Set jumper J50 on the Maxtor hard drive for Master/Slave configuration. Newer systems and interface cards may have the capability to support 4 IDE devices (2 devices per port). Each port must have a Master (primary) device attached before a Slave (secondary) device can be attached. - Mount the Maxtor hard drive into a drive bay and secure it in accordance with the system manufacturers' specifications. - Attach a 40-pin IDE interface connector to J1. The striped edge of this cable indicates pin 1 and must be oriented towards pin 1 at the drive connector and at the host connector. - Attach a DC power connector to J2. - Power up the computer and set the system BIOS/CMOS to Type 9. NOTE: Refer to your system's user guide for help on enabling and programming system BIOS CMOS. Type 9 should equal 900 cylinders 15 heads and 17 sectors per track (SPT). If BIOS Type 9 does not match these parameters, select a user-definable drive type and program the BIOS with 900 cylinders, 15 heads and 17 SPT. If the BIOS does not have a user-definable drive type, choose a drive type with 15 heads and 17 SPT. This will allow the system to see the hard drive. Important Note for Installing Drives Larger Than 2.1GB If your system locks up before you can access the system BIOS/CMOS, the system may have a BIOS with a 4095 cylinder limitation. Please perform the following steps: 1. Turn off the system. 2. Install jumper J42 on the drive using the spare jumper supplied. 3. Restart the system and set the system BIOS/CMOS to Type 9. - Boot your system to the A:> drive using a DOS system diskette. - Change to the DOS drive prompt for the Maxtor drive (i.e., C:, D:) - Insert a blank DOS formatted diskette into the A:> diskette drive. - At the Maxtor drive prompt, type [MAX] and press the [Enter] key. When the transfer is completed, you will have a working copy of MaxBlast software. NOTE: If you have trouble downloading MaxBlast, you can get a copy of the software from one of Maxtor's on-line services. Formatting the Maxtor Hard Drive n Boot your system to the A:> drive using a DOS system diskette. - Insert the MaxBlast diskette into the appropriate diskette drive. - Change to that floppy disk drives' DOS prompt. NOTE: Please review the Readme file before you partition and format your Maxtor hard drive. View this file by typing "Readme" and press the [Enter] key. After reviewing the Readme file, continue the installation. - At the DOS prompt type [DM] and press [Enter]. The Maxtor logo will appear while the software is loading - then two information screens will be displayed. Press the [Enter] key at each screen to continue. The MaxBlast main menu screen will then appear. NOTE: During the installation, MaxBlast software may indicate that a previous partition has been discovered. This is the Maxtor factory-installed partition that can now be erased. MaxBlast is a menu-driven application that requires user confirmation before going to each next step in the installation process. Read the information displayed on each screen carefully and select the appropriate response to allow the partitioning and formatting of the Maxtor hard drive. On-line MaxBlast help is always available by pressing [F1]. When the partitioning and formatting operation is done, MaxBlast will display a message informing you that the process is complete. If your Maxtor hard drive is a bootable Master (primary) drive, one of the following situations will occur when rebooting your system: - A message "Starting Ontrack ..." will appear with a blue Maxtor banner. The system will pause and give instructions for installing an operating system. or - No message will appear and the system will boot directly to the hard drive. If this happens, install your operating system according to the manufacturers' instructions. If your Maxtor hard drive is not a bootable Master (primary) drive: - DOS and Windows 95 users: reboot the system and the drive is ready for use. or - OS/2 and Windows NT users: refer to MaxBlast's on-line help utility for completing the installation.
